Remember when you were a kid and getting a piece of mail addressed to you was exciting? Who was it from? What was in it? A card from Grammy? An invitation to join Batman’s gang? The secret password to enter a magic cave?* Anything could be in that envelope! Anything!
That sense of gleeful anticipation evaporated when you reached adulthood and sorting your mail became a ritual of “junk, junk, bill, junk, bill, junk, junk, junk.”
If you want your customers and prospects to open the marketing pieces you mail to them, you need to recapture their sense of wonder. The wrapping needs to be as enticing as the invitation, offer or announcement inside. A plain white #10 envelope is a one-way ticket to the recycling bin.
If you want your envelope to say the magic words “open sesame:”
- DO explore envelope options before starting the design of your marketing piece. Consider bright or interesting colors, textured papers and unusual sizes.
- DO make sure the design of the envelope faithfully and intriguingly reflects the piece it contains. They should be two parts of a whole.
* In case you’re wondering, the phrase “open sesame” is from the story “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” in the book One Thousand and One Nights. Speaking that phrase opens the mouth of a magic cave in which 40 thieves have hidden a treasure.
